RESEARCH & ANALYSIS
As part of my research for my A level music video I'll be analysing the context behind scenes in music videos. How camera angles, lighting, special effects, props, rule of thirds etc are used to make the viewers more invested in the music video emotionally and literally.
CAMERA MOVEMENTS
1. Static Shot:
• Camera remains still, no movement
• Emphasizes subject's emotions, reactions, or details
2. Pan:
• Horizontal movement, left to right or right to left
• Follows subject, captures wide scenes, or establishes setting
3. Tilt:
• Vertical movement, up or down
• Emphasizes height, power dynamics, or dramatic effect
4. Dolly:
• Camera moves towards or away from subject
• Creates depth, emphasizes emotions, or builds tension
5. Tracking Shot:
• Camera follows subject as it moves
• Creates dynamic, immersive experience
CAMERA WORK
SIA SNOWMAN MUSIC VIDEO
In this music video instead of humans clay figures are used to portray the story because of the rough clay figurines the music video gets are very innocent simple child like feel but to show and represent the emotion in the story camera angles are used in this scene a high camera angle in used to portray that the snow man is in a power less position as the sun keeps melting him and his shelter.
EAST SIDE MUSIC SIDE
In the east side music video multiple characters are introduced and while introducing the characters they used rule of thirds in this shot they decided to place the character more on towards the left to give a more natural appearance.
I’ll be using rule of thirds in my shots while introducing different characters.
WE CANT BE FRIENDS ARIANA GRANDE
In the we can’t be friends music video multiple shots are used to indicate the subjects point of view to help us understand what the subject is seeing and going through almost putting us in the characters shoes A pov shot also helps us better understand a story.
I’ll be using a pov shot in my video to show what my character is looking at so the viewer has an easier time following the story in the music.
HIGH ANGLE SHOT
In the same “we can’t be friends” music video multiple high angle shots are used to show the subject in a powerless position where they don’t have much control over the situation.
I’ll be using high angle shots in my music video when my character feels helpless and defeated.
EDITING & LIGHTING
HAPPIER MUSIC VIDEO
In the happier music video lighting is perfectly used to portray emotions in the start of the clip the girl is very sad and it’s not only shown through her facial expressions but also the gloomy lighting but as soon as her mood changes so does the light everything becomes more saturated and warm giving a welcoming and happy appearance to the the video.
SURVEY
I decided to conduct a survey to better understand my audiences music video preferences I first conducted an informal survey on my instagram stories, the survey really helped me understand what my audience enjoyed and preferred this will enable me to Tailor my music video to my audiences interests ,making my music video more enjoyable and engaging.
To my vision for the music video more clear I decided to conduct a formal survey as well this survey helped me understand my audience more.
Target Audience
Conducting the formal and informal survey helped me better understand my target audience. My Audience are mostly teenage girls who enjoy watching relatable music video that follow a story line. My Audience also appreciates good cinematography with a story that evokes strong emotions.
Mise-en-scène
Mise-en-scène are the visual elements within a scene to convey meaning, mood, and atmosphere.
I made a mood board on Pinterest to represent my vision for the music video
Setting:
Location: The primary location will be a room, as rooms are often considered safe spaces within a home.
Decor: In the present the decor will be aesthetic and cozy to symbolise acceptance and maturity.
In the memories the decor will be childish pink filled with toys to represent the innocence of a child with brown to represent the dullness in the child's childhood.
Props: Dolls and toys will be used to represent childhood and candles, photos hanging will represent getting older.
Lighting;
Natural lighting to create a sense of comfort, relatability with a hint of nostalgia.
Camera Angles and Movement:
High-angle: High angle will be used to highlight the helplessness the child feels.
(examples are given above in camera work)
Acting and Performance;
Crying : Crying will be used to show the disparity the characters are going through and how helpless they feel.
Hugging : Hugging will be used to symbolise comfort and reaching out .
Costume and Makeup
Characters' attire : The character in the present will be wearing brown to blend in as she's exactly what she said she wouldn't be.
The character in the past (the child) will be wearing a contrasting colour to stick out as she wants to be different.
Appearance: The character will wear normal natural makeup to show their raw authentic self almost representing their vulnerability.
