REFLECTING ON MY A LEVEL PRODUCTION WORK

In my music video I decided to represent individuals who had a troubled childhood and how it takes time and effort to heal child hood wounds and if not healed they affect a person later on in their life. My music video starts with a scared child who’s trying to avoid her problems by listening to music hoping the problem just goes away , representing the emotional trauma and distress caused on a child by a stressful environment in the same scene the older version of the character tries to comfort her younger version but fails because the younger version was in her head representing that she never got over her stressful childhood and is still unhealed and unable to comfort her younger self , representing individuals that avoid their problems all their life or still carry unhealed wounds that end up effecting their relationships later on in life they end up holding on to resentment and harming themselves by not being able to mentally move on from situations.

I also wanted to represent individuals that are rarely represented in media like people that wear the hijab it helped me diversify my music video.

I wanted my music video to have a calm feeling and to covey a story of healing. So I decided on a very warm brownish colour scheme as it’s cozy relaxing and gives a sense of comfort (healing), the song I choose “older” Sasha Alex Sloan is a very calming & healing song. The colours the lyrics compliment each other creating a sense of branding. I made sure to keep everything very cohesive whenever I showed the older more mature version the colours were darker and lighting was dim ( lighting was always natural to give a raw and cozy vibe ) whenever I showed the younger version (not in memory) the lighting was brighter warmer full of hope the little girl stood out because she was full of hope but never stood out enough to not go with the branding , I kept the colours scheme for the set brown , the older versions clothing brown (the younger version was supposed to stand out so her outfit was not brown also brown symbolises maturity and a child isn’t mature but her outfit was still not bright), the colour grading was also very warm and dim , the story moved slowly the songs beautiful comforting melody all came together to make a beautiful sense of branding.

My product engages with my audience by telling a story hooking them in the first scene. Leaving them questioning as to why the little girl vanished slowing in the video it is revealed that both the characters are the same girls just from different years it is revealed when the little girl is making the painting and years later the older version is looking at them. The story telling ,the cinematography the smooth transitions all work together to keep the audience engaged and craving for more. The story line is also extremely relatable forcing audiences to see themselves in the character and keep the audiences hooked.

During my research I stumbled across music videos that showed a story throw out the years in one music video for example Ariana grandes song “we can’t be friends” that really inspired me to make my music video In story form so i could make my video more engaging and I could give a message throw my story telling. For the lighting and cinematography I was really inspired by the song “happier” by marshmallow the use of natural lighting and making happy scenes warm and sad scenes cold through colour grading and set changes really inspired me.

I challenged conventions by centring my music video around mental health ( unhealed childhood trauma) which is really done in pop culture I also featured a hijabi in my music video which is almost never done in pop cultural or any form of media.

I drew inspiration from many artist but I also hope I made my own visual identity to standout and by challenging conventional norms I hope it brings change that out media needs.
